I was a carpenter/run crew for the 2024 Utah Shakespeare Festival season. I was a part of early build from January to May, with 3 other carpenters. then I was on Load in from May-June, then I was on run-crew from late June to August. I had to leave my contract early because an offer came my way that I could not turn down. However, I highly valued the team I worked with and everything I learned this year. I had never been much of a carpenter before this and I quite enjoyed it.
*Production photos are at the bottom of the page.
This is a Jail Cell made for A Winter's Tale. The top decorative bits were taken from an old gate. This was 1/2" and 1" box tube, bended and mig welded.
Another view of the Jail
Jail, partially finihed.
All sides of the jail were made flat separately, making sure the pieces were straight. After all pieces were individually built, they were all welded together.
A railing for Much Ado About Nothing. this is one of 4 made for a lower/stair unit.

Skeleton of a curved ramp for Much Ado. The skeleton was CNCd and then assembled, having a few modifications along the way.
This Ramp was made for The Mountain Top and Silent Sky.
My first mig Welding Project ever. A set of 21'x10' legs.
Jail in nearly final form. A "keyhole" was added later. There were no production photos of this.
32 mini pointed arches were made for the Much Ado about Nothing tower unit. They were drawn out, cut on the jig or band saw, cut and stapled, screwed in, then bondo-ed and faded into the steel.

These towers were from the season before but reused, a few feet cut off and modified.
Railings and towers welded together. At this point, it was not clear that there was a second level of arches to the tower, they were added in later.
Stairs to Much Ado tower made.
Stair railing welded and grinded.
Escape stair platform for The 39 Steps.
Escape stair platform finished until Load-in.
platform for large tower for The 39 steps. 2 identical pieced made with 2" spacers in between. This was later added to legs and faced.
Legs added to platform. Then railings and filigree added. This was lofted by a forklift and wooden temp legs until the steel legs were plum and tacked into place. Handrails and big X were later added.
This tower is 17 feet tall and the X is complex angles. This was the hardest thing I built this season and, by far, my favorite thing I built.
Full view of tower before facing was added. Caster plates were also welded on and casters attached to the bottom of this massive structure.
Ladder was also welded flat and then welded on vertically. This is everything grinded before load-in.
I am quite afraid of heights, so to add the big X, I had to lay the tower on its side.
5'x10' steel frames in 1" box tube. 1x4 cross bars were then t-nailed to th welded frame.
the big panels of lauan added over the 1x5 cross braces.
Strips of Lauan were then added to the barn doors.
1/2" AC ply was then added for the barn door parts of the barn doors. Handles and rigging hardware were added ater.
Tower unit, ramps both pictured in this photo. I also was the main upholster-er for the arches pictured in the back. However, I did not take any pictures of these in space. I am terrible at remembering load-in photos.
A different View.

I am very proud of this one.
